NextGen Summit 2024

Theme: Panel session on marriage, career, and spirituality

Introduction: Matthew 19:26: “With God all things are possible.”

This powerful verse underscores the limitless possibilities that come with aligning our vision with God’s purpose. At the NextGen Summit 2024, held at the Foursquare Gospel Church National Convention, this truth formed the foundation for an engaging discussion during a panel session where experts shared insights on relationships, career growth, and spiritual development.

These practical lessons provided guidance on navigating life’s complexities while trusting in God’s divine plan.

One of the key topics discussed was the challenges young people face in relationships. Mrs. Ijeoma Fawole explained that misplaced priorities often lead many into marital relationships prematurely.

For women, she emphasised the importance of building relationships rooted in love rather than a mere quest for attention. True relationships require maturity, which is less about age and more about readiness.

Similarly, she advised men to prioritise discovering their purpose before seeking a partner. Her advice was simple yet profound: “Find a life before you find a wife.” For women, the message was equally powerful—“Be formed before you’re found.” This means investing in self-development to become the person you aspire to be before entering a relationship.

Another significant area of focus was navigating career uncertainty after graduation. Many fresh graduates often feel lost, unsure of how to transition from school to the workplace.

Pastor Tunde Olagunju provided practical advice, noting that education is not just about learning new things but discovering and recovering the potential already within us. He encouraged graduates to begin their journey by volunteering in areas aligned with their career interests and pursuing certifications that can boost their qualifications. He stressed the importance of taking proactive steps rather than waiting for opportunities to appear. “Identify your cutting edge,” he advised, “the unique skills that set you apart.”

Pastor Olagunju highlighted the importance of aligning volunteer opportunities with career aspirations to build relevant skills and networks.

The topic of pursuing full-time ministry was also addressed. Pastor Tunde Jesusina, the National Coordinator of NaFFS, clarified common misconceptions about ministry. He explained that full-time ministry is not necessarily about abandoning one’s job or career but about serving wherever God has placed you.

Leadership roles in student fellowships or local churches, for instance, can be part of God’s preparation for greater assignments. He reminded the audience that their primary assignment and God’s call can coexist harmoniously when approached with balance and dedication.

The session also tackled the dynamics of romantic relationships, particularly knowing when a relationship isn’t working. Mrs. Fawole encouraged individuals to assess whether their relationships are built on healthy foundations. She also touched on the subject of winning someone’s love, stressing the importance of genuine effort and self-improvement.

“Approach matters,” she noted, discouraging manipulative tactics like claiming divine instruction as the sole basis for pursuing someone. Instead, she emphasised the importance of authenticity and working on oneself to naturally attract the right person.

Career success often hinges on building the right relationships, and Pastor Olagunju offered valuable insights on this. He urged attendees to view themselves as brands, noting that while skills and competence can open doors, one’s personal brand is what inspires others to advocate for them. He also encouraged giving back to mentors, who often play pivotal roles in creating opportunities.

“Be visible, competent, and actively involved in communities beyond the church,” he advised, highlighting the importance of expanding one’s network to unlock greater possibilities.

Finally, the panel addressed the issue of retaining people in the church. To keep members engaged, they recommended forming small groups within local churches that replicate the community spirit found in school fellowships. These groups provide a sense of belonging and foster deeper connections, making it easier for members to feel rooted in their spiritual community.

The overarching message from the summit was clear: with God, all things are possible. However, this possibility requires action, preparation, and intentionality. Whether it’s in relationships, career advancement, or spiritual growth, we must take deliberate steps to align our lives with God’s plan while trusting Him to make the impossible possible.
